Zandvoort;  Januari 10,  2003

Sony dealers worldwide have problems ordering VX2000. No stock in shops at the moment! SONY dealercenters worldwide have no stock at this moment! So is this a sign VX3000 is shipping soon? Or do we have it all wrong????  Time will tell!

What Dave wrote:
Last Friday I was ringing around various dealers here in the UK to get their best price for a Sony VX2000 and one dealer told me that Sony had told him that it was now discontinued and due to be replaced by the VX2001. At first I found this very difficult to believe given:-
 i) the length of time that the VX1000 was around before finally being updated (the VX2000 in contrast has only been around about 2 years), however it is reasonable to expect that product cycles are now speeding up, and ii)if the VX2000 is to be replaced by a new model it would seem to make a lot more sense to call that model the VX3000, however I have since read somewhere on the web that there are at least two other electronic products (not video cameras) called VX3000. When I quizzed the dealer about the name he said he wasn't sure if it was going to be VX2001 or VX2100.

I am now wondering whether the dealer could be right. I have read that the VX2000 is now in short supply in many places and that Sony US are offering a rebate to purchasers, something that some companies do shortly before releasing a new replacement product.

GLOBAL-DVC CLUBMEMBERS AND MANY OTHER VX2000/PD150  OWNERS ABSOLUTELY LOVE THEIR CAMERA
SO PLEASE DON'T CHANGE A LOT BUT HAVE A GOOD LOOK AT THIS WISHLIST FOR  AN EVEN BETTER  NEW VX3000
:

  1. REMOVABLE Lens. Standard zoom  20X optical steady shot
YES IT IS NOW ON NEW CANON XL3 !
(Get the Canon GL2/XM2 20X Optical lens)

  2. True widescreen 16:9  1/3 CCD's and also 58mm front mount
(like PD150) - no more digital squeezing or fake 16:9
YES IT IS NOW ON NEW CANON XL3

  3. Hybrid LCD touchscreen*  4inch  (*switchable)
(This new Hybrid system safes power by switching off LCD backlight! The more sunshine it gets the better as seen on IP55! BUT for people who hate to touch an image a switch to normal manuel function is wanted!)

  4. For Photo mode PLEASE 3 megapixel !
(You ask for 3 and possible get 2 ??)

  5. PLEASE  EXTRA Record and Zoom Buttons on Handle/Grip and no exposure Button behind LCDscreen ( also better place for Photo Mode button)

  6. Headphone out at the back PLEASE
    (extra narrationmic. at the back!)

  7. Real progressive scan with 25 (30) pictures per second
(also 24p is a must for many)

  8. A zoom with an adjustable sensitivity & speed.

Though the present zoom ring permits accelerated/ decelerated zooming from "0", it is very hard to maintain zooming speed for very long; the rocker makes this easy, but has abrupt starts/stops; it would be nice to have the rocker have the advantages of both, with maybe a zoom rate selector added...

  9. Bigger viewfinder (with switch for Black/White AND Color)

  10. XLR adaptor and also 4 track audio input

Also use new futures seen on the others (TRV950) we like:
Spot Focus and Spot Light

PLEASE
CONTINUE MINI-DV TAPE SYSTEM
NO MICRO-MV for us !!

NOW A SELECTION OPINIONS OF USER REACTIONS:

YES SONY ENGINEERS
HERE ARE YOUR USERS WISHES!

Like many others have stated on the site, here is my wishlist for a possible VX-3000. (By the way I have owned the VX-2000 for about 15 months and LOVE it!)

1. A true 16x9 CCD - no squished or electronic widescreen
2. make it the first prosumer DTV camcorder with user selectable formats from SD to 1080p HD
3. user selectable frame rates up to 60fps
4. removable lens with real manual iris control - interchangeable lenses I mean!
5. DVCAM or HDCAM in small casette size
6. true SMPTE time code (with free run/rec run TC option)!
7. optional matte box accesory for traditional square filters
8. keep the same form factor - it's the ideal shape & weight now!
9. throw in a CD with the Sony capture & editing software that comes with the VAIO computers.
10. XLR audio inputs.

I would be willing to wait an extra year or even two for a model like this, because it would be truly kick-ass. That would give enough time to let them bring in these features and keep it at a reasonable price (in the range of the PD-150).

Thanks, and great site!

Dear Sony:

1.  Please -- please put a zoom and record start/stop on the handle like the GL1/GL2 !!
2.  Modify the hand strap slightly so it doesn't interfere with the transport door opening.
3.  Add Night Shot mode. Some see this as a gimmick but it has some nice legitimate uses.
4.  Keep the digital still photo features OUT of my video camera.  There are plenty of real, high quality still cameras on the market and I can easily capture frames within editing software.
5.  Design a new camera with this in mind: "We buy these cameras to shoot high quality video and audio"
6.  Don't do anything to sacrifice the low light performance of the VX2000 !!!!
7.  I love the VX2000

Touch Screens ?                  No !  I have this on a TRV50 and hate it. Screen is smudged forever.  Plus, these touch screens are more grainy than normal screen.

Mount for separate lenses ?  Yes, would be nice.

Super Night Shot ?                A gimmick to most but I use it for very very low light. I keep a  TRV10 around just for this purpose.

Network functions ?               Please, please keep these extras OFF my video camera.

Bluetooth ?                           The ONE wireless thing I might want to do is transfer video. However, this is the ONE thing Bluetooth doesn't do.

MicroMV ?                            We need another tape standard like a hole in the head. Affordable MiniDV recorders and decks haven't exactly flooded the market. Why introduce a new format ?

Viewfinder B&W ?                 If it offered higher resolution than current color VF, yes. Would make manually focusing easier.

Front lens 58 or 52mm ?        Makes no difference to me.  But bigger is better, right ?

Demonstration modes ?         Another worthless feature except to equipment dealers.

-------------------------------------------------------

hi,  I'm a filmmaker and own a sony TRV-700 digital camera, and have been thinking about purchasing a higher end camera along the lines of the XL1 or VX2000, 3000. I'm also very interested in this new High Definition technology, especially when lucas filmed episode 2 on the FW900. I was thinking, would it be possible to blend the two technologies together? Mini Digital Video and High Definition?

I have also desinged a camera(Just on Paper) and was wondering if you'd like to take a look at it? It uses a F-T CCD with a mini high powered HD lense, connected to a DV body type camera. It then uses technology from Firewire being able to connect to (HD) decks, so it can convert the HD signal to the DV VTR.

You have the option of filming in NTSC 4:3, 16:9, or 720p and 1080p lines resolution at 2:35 Cinemescope in 24 frames, or 30. These are just a few bells and whistles but there is more on paper. Anyway, thanks.

Frank Benesh

------------------------------------------------------------

1. LCD screen 3,5 inch

2. Photo modus 2 or better 3 Mio pixel

3. front mount still 58 mm

3. Zoom 20x

Greetings, Wolfgang Kieckbusch

---------------------------------------------------------------------

Good afternoon Sony Engineering people.
The most important feature of the VX3000 will be further improvement of the already "best of the prosumers" low light capability.

Other wishes are:

1. Please improve the VX2000/PD150 Optical Image Stabiliser to equal or preferably surpass the Canon XL1. I'd be prepared to tolerate a 10% (or maybe more) increased weight, if that was absolutely necessary for a significantly better OIS.

2. A wider lens is much preferred over an increased focal length.

3. Ability to record 4 (12 bit) channels simultaneously, with individual level displays in the viewfinder (OK to switch display between each pair of channels).

4. Proscan ability - please double frame rate from 12.5 fps (PAL) to 25 fps.

While we're in a communications mode .......
a. Please make
a sunshade for the Sony VCL-0758 0.7x WA converter - currently
an unfortunate omission.
b. DSR-250 replacement could do with a
Li Ion option - allowing NPF-950/960's to be used with the larger VX body!!
Regards,
Hughy.

O   Bigger CCD chips such as the VX1000, the daytime color is still unmached.
O   A stronger Bayonet mount, plastic is just not cutting it, I mean skateboarders will be using this camera and having a better chance of the darn lens NOT falling off is a good selling point.
O   Record Button on the handle, again, This would be a great Selling point.
O   A regular lens like the vx1000, the vx2000 has the worst lens yet, Many skateboarders (im sure this isnt your main crowd your trying to get to buy, but we trash your cameras, so we know what needs to be fixed) Its the worst lens to work with the Century Optics .3X lens/Vx1000,Vx2000/Trv900,Pd150,Pd100, and GL1.
I will most likely think of many more.

---------------------

I have 2 Sony VX-2000 cameras, but I will not buy another. The only thing I will have in mind when I purchase my next camera is "does it shoot in 24 frame progressive mode" as the Panasonic DVX100 will. If several cameras have that feature by the time of purchase, I will then look at which shoots in 16x9 without compression. Thank you for soliciting this feedback

John Adames Jr.

-------------------------------

1) A *video* camera: No concessions to still camera operation, "MPEG4" etc which impair DV video operation or increase cost in any way, thankyou.
2) 25P true progressive PAL at 1/25 second exposure
3) Wider Field of view at wide - say 30-32mm 35mm equivalent, even at the
expense of zoom range (Like DVX100).
4) Control over gamma, sharpening, colour balance in camera, with user presets
5) Multiple while balance presets: Cloudy, incandescent, flourescent plus
direct entry of colour temperature.
6) Reduced size (particularly reduced length) - more like VX1000 or GL1/XM1, please. Side screen doesn't need to be big, just bright & high-resolution.
7) Even better image stabiliser.
8) Frame-accurate location of end of tape, without using memory tapes (Panasonic can do this, but maybe it's Sony's policy not to).
Regards,
John Vickers

-----------------------------------------

Being in the middle of a feature, here's what SONY could change for me: Get rid of the damned edge enhancement altogether. Just loose it. Out.  Give us some true progressive scan that does not kill resolution as much, especially at 1/30th. And it would be good if there were true 16X9 CCDs on there.. Also good mic inputs under the camera, and not on top of the lens where the cords get tangled and in the way.  I know there's been some good color contrast improvements recently - so that we'd have to worry less about blown out windows. It's like shooting old-fashioned reversal stock.
No edge enhancement. No edge enhancement.

John Palisano

24 fps for NTSC with built in FILM LOOK ENHANCEMENT.

--------

Want: Continuously variable manual iris control. (Do away with the current systems that moves in steps.) Non-servo lens to aid in manual focusing. (Still cameras are able to do auto focus with a non-servo lens.)
Buddy Frazer

------------

Audio line inputs! Bypassing all the AGC/ mic pre crap! It'll solve a lot of
True widescreen 1/3 chip (like its big brother the 2/3 chip) - no more digital squeezing
a better lens
24 fps switchable
longer tape capacity
a zoom with a adjustable sensitivity & speed.
better matrix metering.

---------------

We should shoot for things like:
Removable bayonet-mount lenses
Full 30-FPS Proscan
At least 1.2 megapixel still resolution
Larger viewfinder
XLR I/O
Super NightShot
20x optical zoom
& other things of this nature. Forget if they add a pound or two.

-----------------

I'd like: a true widescreen 1/3 chip (like its big brother the 2/3 chip) - no more digital squeezing

A better lens:
> Well, the VX2000 lens appears to be diffraction-limited by about f4, and good to the corners and close to the f4 performance even wide open (see:
www.ferrario.com/ruether/diffraction.htm ), with excellent color, contrast, and freedom from flare, so I assume you mean better zoom control? Wider zooming range? Or...?
>Answer: No. I really meant a better lens - sharper, higher resolution, more
contrast. Lens quality is the bigest limiting factor on 1/3 chip cameras.
The Fuji & Canon lenses used bradcast camersa (1/2 & 2/3 chips) are vastly
superior.

A zoom with a adjustable sensitivity & speed.

Better matrix metering.

I've been happy with the VX2000 auto exposure (modified when necessary by use of the AE-bias or lock-and-shift controls), but any *real* improvement in metering is welcome ("matrix" metering has only recently advanced to the point where it is useful for other than negative materials - in the past, it was a "when in doubt, overexpose" system, only suitable for negative materials and not positives like slides and video).
I would like to see: better stabilization of the VX2000 lens when zoomed long (without spoiling the excellent short-end stabilization, which does not now have the common "bouncing ball" effect problem, or the "swimming" problem when used with a tripod);
a bit smaller overall package size, if practical; a quieter mic preamp (if for no other practical reason than to quiet the complaints over this VX2000 non-issue...;-); and an accessory XLR adapter that uses the hot shoe (like on the GL-2), and has variable padding for each input (preferably in several fixed, accurate increments [I would like this padding also available for the mini-plug inputs, to best match the mic sensitivities to the currently-excellent AGC]).
David Ruether

Completely user configurable power standby.
internal 60Gig mini HD removable.
Full XLR Balanced Audio with 16/48 or 24/96 4 channel audio. With DSP onboard.
oh yeah.. it's gotta fit in my pocket. :-)

NO

Interesting...#2 was less weight,
I personally find the weight to be just fine. I appreciate a camera that doesn't feel like puffed plastic. A lot of people, especially shoulder mount users, actually add weight (bigger batteries) to use as a counterbalance. I found that using a larger, heavier lens and battery actually helped me produce smoother shoulder mounted shots with my other camera. Of course, this poll is for a VX2k replacement, so I guess they assume hand holding... I just really prefer a solid piece of gear over light and flimsy. But then again, I like older cars too.
(RE: We did mean holding by hand is just  a bit too heavy. Remember we often add shotgun mic filterholder and fat battery! A less weight camera one can always make heavier, never lighter! )
