Hi – passing this on.

I’ve followed the on-going saga about the PD170s and audio hum issue. Recently I had to replace a stolen PD150. As a replacement, my Insurance company ordered a PD170 from B&D photo. Checking the Serial Number when it arrived, I saw that it fell under the 1213500 serial number being given via ABCDV.com from Global DVC by Jan Van Der Meer.
My insurance company is going to make B&H take the camera back and reimburse me for the expense of buying myself direct from a vender of my choice. However, I was finding it impossible to locate a PD170 here in the US with serial numbers above 1213500. A few more phone calls later, I found out why.

Back Porch Consultants is an authorized Sony repair center in Norcross, GA. They received a service bulletin on this issue and were nice enough to send me a copy.

On this service bulletin, it lists the serial numbers of the affected cameras:

Sony DSR-PD170 - (NTSC) S/N from 1110001 to 1113000
Sony DSR-PD170P (PAL) – S/N from 1210001 to 1213500
Sony DSR-PD190P -             S/N from 1600001 to 1601600

It makes sense that the S/Ns given to Van Der Meer were for the Pal Version since he’s in Europe. But it doesn’t apply to the NTSC cameras sent to the US. The PD170 I received from B&H still falls into the affected range – but I was able to locate a vender with PD170s with S/Ns above 1116000.

I thought this info would be useful to others here in the US. Feel free to spread the news around as you see fit.

Billy

Global-DVC diary for hum LCD problems with first PD170 (last days first).

Monday January 26, 2004

Today we finally received confirmation
that all possible audio problems with DSR-PD170 are officially solved.  Mr Theo Vessies Sony Communication & PR Coordinator Business Solutions of Sony Benelux B.V. stated that from start some (but not all)  PD170 did have audio problems with an opened LCD screen.

All new shipped PD170's starting Januari 20, 2004 with serie number 1213500 and up, will have a modification and according to this report have better signal/noise ratio than DSR-PD150.   For buyers with this audioproblem in Holland with a Silversupport guarantee Sony will offer a free modification.  For the rest of the world please contact your local Sony repaircenter.

HOW CAN SONY US DENY THE PROBLEM ?
PD170 BUYERS REACTIONS:
Read all about it on this page AND

Monday December 22,

Sony Product Manager for Sony Europe confirmed audio problems with PD170 PAL. But also bad news for NTSC PD170 owners, first reports from Los Angeles with same problems.  Delivery and production halts, first time in hissstory!

From Osaka Japan:
Read Chuckmeister report at LATEST MAILREPORTS on this page.

WHAT IS THE PROBLEM WITH PD170 PAL & NTSC FIRST SHIPMENT ?
WHY DID SONY HALT PRODUCTION ?

If you're thinking of buying a PD170 BEWARE! Again there is a fault with a first batch. You may remember there was an audio hiss problem with the PD150 when it first came out. Now  HiSSStory is repeating itself! This time when you flip out the mini LCD screen there is an audio buzz which is recorded to tape on a number of these cameras. Sony Europe mailed us they are aware of the problem and they're currently waiting to hear from Japan as to what to do about it. Not all cameras are affected - it seems confined to a certain batch of first shippings.

If you're buying a PD170 make sure you test the camera first. Listen carefully to see if there's a buzz when you flip out the screen. This is most noticeable with no mic plugged in and audio out (headphone) soundlevel on LCDscreen in highest position. If there is; try another PD170, with a different serial number. If there is not BEWARE it might occur later on according to latest reports that the buzz stopped suddenly!

One of our Global-DVC PD170 PAL users noticed this new sound problems as first. It is a clear low to medium humming sound. It varies. BUT very SPOOKY after having his camera for some weeks now the problem disappeared suddenly, as if it was done with a secret remote beamer from Japan via Satellite? But seriously, this (former) Sony-fan thinks this state is even worse. Now this professional producer is not sure if this problem could occur during important shootings! He returned his camera, got full refund and is interested in a competitive DV camera now!

The official line from Sony is for save shooting:
do not use LCD screen.
Keep it closed for humfree sound recordings.
Ask your local Sony service department for modification updates!"

SONY REPUTATION SAVED BY GLOBAL-DVC BELL.

Thanks to our immediate alarm (December 9, 2003) Sony stopped production PD170 (17/12/03) so many new PD170 buyers won't be disappointed. Product Manager for Sony Europe confirmed audio problems while LCD panel is opened. They are currently in investigation and will be modified. First sold DSR-PD170 with this problem will be modified.  Delivery is delayed until further notice. (Probably end January 2004).  Thanks to this quick action Sony will save dealers and buyers a lot of problems, but this should never happen in first place. This is the second time it happens. Also first production PD150 had audio problems.

HISS-STORY PART II

NEW SOUND PROBLEMS FOR DSR-PD170 PAL.

DEAR SONY ENGINEERS,

Please SONY ENGINEERS remember our Global Digital Videographers Centre is the very first promoter of your fantastic range of DV cams. Your VX1000 was the best prosumercam for 6 years.  Many of these users did business and build experience. They like SONY and SONY products. Next step: they bought VX2000 or PD150. Also the professional liked this 'smaller' camera for broadcast work. Result: 90% of our members are Sony users!

BUT now again first professional SONY PD170 buyers are really sad. HISS STORY repeats! Like with PD150 your audio in PD170 has a failure. For PD150 you had a modification. US market even had to pay for that, while in Europe it was for free!  Also DSR-VX2000 had the same problem. Reason for BBC to make a special modification with an extra sound mixer and offered their own guarantee and service for this modification in London.

So again first PD170 buyers will get a new sound problem. It is NOT SOLVED at the moment.  However PD170 is still on sale without warning!  That is not so nice!  When PD170 was introduced at IBC 2003 you promised these problems would be completely solved!

BUT now UK Broadcasters specialists with PD170 again have bad reviews on disappointing sound checks. It is intermittent. If you push and pull on the LCD the interference varies - it is probably an earthing problem which is easily fixed. But Sony should not have released a camera yet again with a sound fault. Although the hiss level is better, they have not improved the headroom, so high level sound inputs still distort. AGC ON is still the same as PD 150. Also operation is the same so sound levels are not really controllable whilst filming.

BBC recommended operating practice remains the same as PD 150 as outlined here:

www.bbctraining.co.uk/onlineCourse.asp?tID=5160&cat=2781

It seems Sony has to look into this matter soon and check first production models again now. The sooner the better! Despite all promises at IBC2003 concerning old hiss problems, again we are disappointed  to reopen HISS-STORY PART II.

After using mics high and low balanced (onboard XLR's), a anoying inteference tone is heard when the new hybrid LCD screen is opened and activated . When LCDscreen is closed, sound is OK and better than PD150 ever was!  Hope Sony immediate sorts out this interference (?)  problem and if necessary stops producing and selling more units before costs and grieve with buyers and dealers get really worse and will cost them a fortune!

Again first Global Digital Videographer members are shocked, after waiting for nearly 3 months since IBC for introduction. This is a production investment for many. Now they have to sent back their new camera again.  Really hope this news urges Sony to an immediate check and stop production.

NTSC USERS QUESTION. (please respond)

How about PD170 NTSC ??? Has anybody using PD170 in US done this test? Get a professional mike of any kind, connect it to the XLR's and listen to hiss difference with opened and closed LCD door! You hear te problem or you don't?  Please let us know to get worldwide complaints bundled on this site, we direct them direct to responsible Sony PD170 Japan Department!

Please sent us your own test results and remarks:

CHUCKMEISTER REPORT:

Further to this Sony problem... the fix is on the way during annual production line shut down for the Holidays and whether they will "quietly" allow owners to have it taken in and repaired cost free or shipping free is still not been answered but, again it may get handled like before where some regions and countries will get one kind of service while some others a variance. One can only hope .... "Sony does The Right Thing!"

Subject:
Hum with LCD screen open on my new NTSC PD170

Just got my PD170 NTSC here in Los Angeles, California a few days ago. I notice a sound which is not hiss, but rather a low-volume hum. The volume of the hum varies from nonexistent to an annoying "buzzing bee" sound depending on the position of the LCD screen, however, readjustment away from and then back to the same position will usually result in a different volume of hum than previously. It appears to occur quite randomly, although it's always audible in one position or another. The sound does get recorded on tape. I suppose it is what could be referred to as a non-grounded equipment type of sound, but I don't really know. Please let me know if others have reported this for NTSC and what the status with Sony is! The serial number of this PD170 is: # 1111845.
Thanks, Ted Levy
Venice, Los Angeles
CALIFORNIA USA

AHA thank you TED for this most important report! We were almost sure NTSC models had the same problem. Chuckmeister (supervideo.com) confirmed it also!  You're right its not so much a high HISS tone but rather a mid to low volume HUM with varies in noice! Sony told us they were looking into the problem and hold production at the moment!

Jan I called Sony's regional service studio(X)( for our new mailadres please see header on our new site www.global-dvc.nl ) (change X for @) here in Burbank, California today. The friendly guy said he hadn't heard of the LCD/audio problem. He connected us with the Georgia repair studio(X)( for our new mailadres please see header on our new site www.global-dvc.nl ) (change X for @) (where all PD170s have to be sent for service!) on the other side of the country, and the technician there said he hadn't heard about this either! I said I didn't want to send the camera across the U.S. for repairs until the problem was recognized by Sony USA and a standard fix was in place. Very frustrating.

Hi Jan,

I'm writing from the south of Italy, my name is Jerome. I'm planning to buy a PD-170P from globalmediapro, directly from their studio(X)( for our new mailadres please see header on our new site www.global-dvc.nl ) (change X for @)s in London (I will be there on 19 of January), but now I have a question: I will buy a camera with or without the "hiss" problem? so...do you now the serial numbers of the "first old" PD170P or, do you now were can I find them? please, help me.
Thanks a lot for your site...it's simply the best!

Hello Girolamo,
Thank you for compliments. All camera's up to know could have this problem or occur later so wait till new shipment !

December 17,
Tom Gillespi about new CANON GL3 ( PAL VERSION: MX3)

Jan: Thanks for the latest PD170 info from your website. And the BBC training site info. I've got a GL2 and me thinks Canon will be coming out with a GL3 this spring (all those rebates!)--probably an upgraded GL2 with at least on-board XLR which would nicely position it between the VX2100 and PD170. (I do like my GL2...)

I'd seriously thought about the PD170 but was shocked to discover the PAL hiss problem via your site. Possible Buy Mode went into Neutral till smoke clears. The Canon upgrade is 2-3 months off--probably wait to see how they handle the 24fps, 16:9, XLR upgrades Panasonic and Sony are toying with. I'm hoping Canon will do at least 2 of 3 to make our lives and choices more interesting. (Be nice to upgrade the Canon chassis too but maybe expecting too much.)

There's no word on GL3. I figure Canon has to do something fast since Sony upgraded and Panasonic has gotten so much 24f attention. They've got to do something to keep my attention span from wandering to a PD170!

Thanks for the hot info! Makes one wonder if this stuff gets much testing or whether we're $3500 guinea pigs...

NEW PANASONIC AG-DVC 30 out in April!

His new VX 2100 is an NTSC serial number #1320910 bought at www.Tristatecamera.com for $2500.
He did FIRST TEST VX2100 versus PD150 at www.videoproductionbiz.com/videobiznews.html
Fortunately NO PROBLEMS for NTSC models? (No bad reports yet! Keep checking these pages)
Brent compares his low light black cat with Sony VX 2100 VS the Sony PD 150.

PS
You might want to keep an eye out for the Panasonic AG-DVC 30 due out here in April.
It will have 30 Frames per second mode, XLR inputs, low light of 7 lux, and a street price of around $2500.
It's not the Black Momba at Supervideo. This camera will have 1/4" 410,000 pixel chips instead
of 1/6" 3,000,000 pixels hence the improved low light. Also will be the first 3 chip to have night vision mode.
You should look at buying out Supervideo. Superchuck is selling but at what price I don't know.

COMMENTS  CHUCKMEISTER SUPERVIDEO.COM:

Merry Aloha Christmas to you and your family Jan, I can ONLY confirm all that you have said...
Here is my dilemma, many times a defect is said to occur when in fact it was part of a feature or some
setting is being miss used or things along that line. I can substantiate the reports you have and on
BOTH sides of the puddle with PAL as well as NTSC. Sony as of Saddam's Capture Sunday 14th
December has not issued the preliminary advisory which would be a precursor to the recall or
the issue of voluntary submission for repair by those owners wishing their camcorders to be "adjusted."

My personal wish is for Sony to immediately address these issues and these concerns so as to not
put a blight on both their reputation and that of this otherwise FINE camcorder PD170.
I have asked permission to post an Official Sony response... but, the one I have is NOT satisfactory
at this moment and I await their 'RE-THINKING' on this matter... Unfortunately :-(

The REAL 16:9 chip for the new Panasonic DVX100 16:0 will remain Vaporware till it is BETA tested successfully...
and that is about as close I want to get on THAT subject. So many things are NOT Doing well Jan...
if I did not know any better I would say the Japanese are definitely rattled by the China onslaught of merchandizing
and consumer goods pouring out.

Sony was never in the RED ink until these last couple of years and their lack of innovative and constant improvement
in many areas shows that. We were to have had our first solid state recorder by 2000 and I have yet to see a single
camcorder utilizing the Flash Memory except for the PRETEC.

I do believe in 2004 we will have 10GB Flash Memory developed for High Definition recording in a miniature camcorder
but by whom is the $64 dollar question right now. I believe we will see in 2004 the demise and/or replacement of the spinning
- whirling recorders with non moving FLASH memory devices.
Blue Laser can get us to 43GB in a postage stamp size device very quickly.
OLED will be able to give us screens without heat, weight and most importantly.... High Costs.
My Mai-Tai fingers are crossed :-))

WAAROM kost de PD170 PAL in de US € 2995 en in NL € 4999 ?
( VX2100 voor $1894 )

WHY $2000 PRICE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN NTSC AND PAL???

DV USERS WORLDWIDE often wonder why SONY can't offer both systems in one!
Same PD 170 DV-CAM camera could be used for both systems! Just like DSR11.
This SONY DVCAM deck records and plays both systems: NTSC AND PAL!

So PD170 is also capable in switching between these systems, but Sony locked this function.  Why? They probably think they make bigger profit this way! It won't cost them a dime extra to offer a multy system camera! But who wants it???   (We do, and we're sure many European with clients or relatives in US or Canada) How many of you would like to be able to record in both systems?

ps: keep up the good work!

Accepteert Sony garantie in Europa? Ja/Nee? Navragen bij Sony Klantenservice! Geen antwoord tot dusverre.

Kosten Sony PD170 PAL
in USD 3,268.00
Invoerheffing 4,9%,
Belangrijk: is aanschaf inclusief CE keurmerk?

Wij zien graag uw reacties:

BUYING PD170 (OR OTHER CAMS)
DV SHOPPING IN SINGAPORE: ( info from newsgroups )

To shop in Singapore is like treading on thin ice... especially in electronics stores where they would gladly pull out a manufacturer's
suggested retail price list to show you the "discount" they are offering to you. Don't be fooled, these msrp are pure bull shit. They do not reflect the market prices. This is a ploy that shop salespeople and owners always use on unsuspecting tourists. They are all bandits in clean shirts! Avoid shopping in SINapore for electronic items altogether unless you are very sure of the prices you can get elsewhere. Even so, becareful of the bait and switch antics, and the extra charge for "international warranty" crap they will
give you. All in all, I find SINapore shops not trustworthy in general Theyare all out to make a quick buck and leave you for dead!

If you buy a camcorder in Singapore and the exact same one in the uk and both are pal versions. the uk one will be of far better quality as what i know is that singapore one's are from the chineese market and have plastic lenses. i bought a sony dcr trv50 last year in edinburgh-scotland and this year my freind bought a sony dcr trv50 in singapore. pitchure is very dull compaired to my uk version. another scam is that when i went in with my trv50 to an electronics store in singapore,i said i am interested in a sony dcr trv80. he put mine on through a tv monitor and all the people's faces where pure blood red and colour's where dreadful,
then he put the trv80 on and all was ok. these guys have a small remote control and they put the colour up full and distort the piture etc. then when they take a camcorder from the shelf they re-set the remote so all s normal. a buying scam ... dont be fooled by what they say as when i arrived back in scotland i put my trv50 through the tv monitor and colour was excelent. yes the sales staff are pretty violent as i found out in a shop on colman or coleman street. all in all only trust your own judgement.

NEW DSR-PD170

ANOTHER SONY HIT ?

Mr. Kiyoshi Inoue
Product Planning Manager PD170 Sony Japan
known as Father of the new PD170. Demonstrating Prototype at IBC!
First results with PD170 in a dark corner at Sony Booth IBC 2003
show what 1 LUX means,  unbelievable quality!

San Fransico DVexpert Adam Wilt (owns PD150) at Sony Booth IBC Saturday September 13, 2003

Zandvoort 11 September 2003:

This morning Sony Product managers proudly showed us at IBC2003 in Amsterdam the new working prototype PAL version  of the PD170. Shipping end this year.  Pity, no reversible lenses, no progressive scan and no 24p/s like many were hoping for BUT some very interesting upgrades which makes it a real winner!

Comparison PD150 and PD170:

1.  Bigger viewfinder (same monitor with magnifier)

2. Prescision Hybride 200.000 pixel LCD screen (no turning off backlight) and switch between LCD and viewfinder.  On/off or both on/off. Now the more sun the better is your picture!!

3. improved sound quality for manual recordings. (All hissproblems solved) -6db better S/N on mic inputs. Due to improved audio process circuit

4. improved (same) CCD with 1 lux low light (in stead of 2) due to improved CCD and signal process.

5. bundeled sales with extra wide angle lens 0.7x and extra lens hood.  Standard is a lens hood with in two parts closing 'eyebrows' lens cover.  Pity. No place for any filters.  So have to buy a Century, Formatt or other matt-box.

6. Handle/grip on top is slightly different. 10mm Higher than the current. The size is larger in order to get an improved grip. Also comes with start stop button and zoom rocker with 3 speeds.

7. Playback functions on top camcorder!

8. Improved exposure control. Now  24 in stead of 12 steps.

9.  A i.LINK Cable Strap is provided as a supplied accessory.  This small plastic plate can strap the i.LINK cable and it can protect the cable to easily remove.  It avoids the accident when external HDD is recording the picture.

           Sony Site Info on PD170:
Picture quality and reliability are two of the key features that helped make the DSR-PD150P such a phenomenal success – widely regarded as the de facto standard for professional 3CCD compact camcorders since its launch in 2000. The DSR-PD170P builds on this success with improved audio-video performance, as well as a host of ergonomic and operational improvements – specifically developed in response to customer requests. A wide conversion lens (VCL-HG0758) and a new hood are also bundled in with the camcorder, which will be priced identically to the DSR-PD150P to ensure great value-for-money. The camcorder’s body has also been subtly restyled with a new two-tone body colour.

Video Audio improvements
  • The minimum illumination specification is improved from 2lx to 1lx due to an improved signal processing.
  • The audio quality for manual recording is improved by 6dB (S/N Ratio) due to enhancements to the audio processing circuit.

    Operational Improvements
  • An on-handle zoom lever and rec. start/stop button have been added to make the camcorder much easier to control during low-angle shooting. (Zoom speed can be switched between faster, slower and off via a slide switch on the side of the handle.)
  • A new design handle is larger and reshaped to make for an easier grip.
  • A larger size viewfinder makes for more comfortable viewing, with an enlarged window size for the magnifier and even the eye-cup.
  • A precision, 200,000 pixel hybrid LCD panel makes it much easier to monitor picture quality, even in direct sunlight.
  • Simultaneous turn-on of LCD panel and viewfinder enables a user to control the focus using the viewfinder, while using the LCD panel for setting the camera angle.
  • Iris control is improved with a doubling of control steps from 12 to 24 for a smoother, more sensitive response.

    New Supplied Accessories

  • The Wide Conversion Lens (VCL-HG0758).
  • Two new Lens Hoods. The LSF-S58 hood is designed for use with the above item, so the wide conversion lens can be removed without removing the hood itself. The hood can still be used when the wide conversion lens is not used. The second hood replaces the one supplied with the DSR-PD150P – the new design features a built-in lens cap can be opened or closed using a lever located at the side of the hood.
  • An i.LINK cable strap consisting of a small plastic plate helps protect the cable, making it easier to remove.

The DSR-PD170P will also come with these accessories; AC-L15 AC Adaptor (was AC-L10 on PD150P), ECM-NV1 Monaural Microphone, NP-F330 info LITHIUM Rechargeable Battery Pack, RMT-811 Remote Commander, Stereo AV Cable and a Carrying Belt.

The DSR-PD170P will be available from December 2003 and is designed for the same applications as the DSR-PD150P, namely broadcast, filmmaking, corporate and events coverage.

SONY PD170/ VX2100 fits in old Ambico PD150/VX2100 BUT:

"I am aware that Sony introduced the new VX2100/PD170, which is very similar
in size to the current VX2000/ PD150 but the VX2100/ PD170 is 10mm taller
and also has a bigger viewfinder which unfortunately will not make it fit
our VH2000/ PD150 housing without some modification. The good news is
that we will redesign and relocated the housing electronics for the new
VX2100/PD170, figure about 6 weeks before it becomes available on the
market, please check up will us in the new year for further updates."
