The UNIVERSAL mini MOUNT

Global-DVC Comments:

On this XL1 setup you can see two big differences which are not at the basic set-up. Its the windjammer in the special holder called EQ-XL1 Equalizer and the XL1 universal minimount! We worked with this set up and are very enthusiastic it is only a small product but with great results! It places this cam on the place were it should be ......on your shoulder!

EQ-XL1  EQUALIZER
Equalizer will provide wind noise protection to 40+ mph with no dB loss (dialogue) in the midrange with a fully balanced frequency response curve and...

Equalizer is a high performance fabric/mesh slip-on windscreen.  It is greatly superior to the common foam sock.  Equalizer offers far higher wind protection, along with a sweetened mid-range (to pull in clear, crisp dialogue).
It has become increasingly important to have clean audio at the source, especially for digital and stereo broadcast.
Equalizer will attenuate wind noise 30dB or more than the largely inefficient foam sock - far more effective than any competitive slip-on screen!  It follows the microphone frequency range with a purity that approaches the quality of our full size Super-screen models.

The primary purpose of Equalizer is to provide real wind noise protection for the professional video camera microphone.
Also it may be boom or fixture mounted, or used hand-held.
Equalizer can be used in severe rain and snow, while keeping the microphone dry and acoustically unaffected.
Equalizer will physically dampen hard knocks and protect the microphone while in transit.   Expected lifetime (based on 13 years of production Mini-screen manufacturing) is 15 to 20 years, or more.

Equalizer, like the Mini-screen and Super-screen, is made of unbreakable polyethylene, epoxy and nylon. The tough outer acoustical fur is the softest and finest in the world.   Unlike foam socks and cheap fur covered foam imitation copies, that crumble and contaminate a microphone in a year or two, Equalizer will keep your microphone in a safe and pristine condition.
This new low cost version of Mini-screen is essentially unchanged from the original design Mini-screen, as was introduced at NAB in April, 1985.

Weight: 1.7 ozs. - 48g. Instruction manual. Warranty: 3 years

MM-XL1 Universal MINI-MOUNT
This new design of the 12 year old Mini-mount will provide a true foundation presence for high quality audio recording, effectively eliminating zoom motor drone and gear tap  noise. Also eliminated is handling and tape transport noise. The Mini-mount is a universal and modular type that enables you to instantly switch to any other mic - up to 30mm in diameter. It will also configure...

Universal MINI-MOUNT

The Universal Mini-mount is a new generation, low profile and lightweight microphone mount, with major design advances from the first generation of 13 years. The isolation design of the Mini-mount product line is modeled after our full sized cradle mount, which since 1975 has been by far the quietest microphone mount design in the world. This highly tuned V4 stable isolation platforms give a microphone float, without 'flopping' around like mediocre, rubber band in- a - loop designs. Having a natural frequency of just 3-5 cycles, the double cantilevered suspension effectively isolates your microphone from incoming camera noise, lens noise and mic boom handling noise.  This is accomplished through direct sound cancellation and energy transposing principles.  It is balanced to function with or without a matching slip-on windscreen. The Universal Mini-mount is so named because, like our full size MM30m Mini-mount, the unit holds any light to medium weight microphone up to 30mm in diameter, with an appropriate mm sized reducing sleeve. This enables a fast changeover to short or long directional mics, as the situation dictates. The Universal Mini-mount is also modular in design. The microphone isolation assembly (cradle) is detachable from the lower section (carriage), allowing the mount to be attached to virtually any and every camera platform. It can be instantly removed from a camera carriage and attached to a hand held mic boom swivel assembly, hidden fixture mounting and other mounting, by means of two Phillips head machine screws. Mini-mount is ideal for isolating desks, tables and podiums. The camera carriage utilizes the existing camera clamp and hold the Mini-mount above the clamp, either ahead of it or behind it, depending on mic balancing considerations and positioning length along the camera. The cradle can rotate around the clamp, positioning to the side, underneath, etc. The Mini-mount modular design allows for inexpensive bracket carriage designs that fit camera lock down fittings, shoe fittings, etc. With the Universal Mini-mount, a change from a short, wide angle directional mic for interviews and the like to a long highly directional mic for longer range views, such as audio selections within a crowd, bird and nature work etc., takes only a few seconds. If the background sound is unacceptable, a minute only is necessary to have the Mini-mount/microphone on the end of a hand held boom.

Mini-mount is available for most all short and long range directional microphones.
The Light Wave Mini system is designed for all E.N.G., E.F.P., documentary and feature work.  It is recommended for inside work, where fast pans or pop can cause real problems.  The Mini system will provide a balanced indoor/outdoor clean recording with reduced sibilance and scratch for a deep enhanced midrange presence.

Weight: 3.3 ozs. - 93 g. Includes one 27mm sleeve
Instruction manual  Warranty: 3 years

SYSTEM ISOLATOR SI-XL1

The SI-XL1 System Isolator fits between the viewfinder and the camera body. The viewfinder assembly is moved 60 mm forward, ie., the camera moves back 60 mm, providing a balanced and relaxed shoulder support.

The SI-XL1 system isolator is a multi-purpose isolator coupler specific to the Canon XL1 camcorder. The SI-XL1 is designed to provide shock and vibration isolation to the XL1 viewfinder and microphone mount assembly system of the camera.

The SI-XL1 can be attached or removed instantly, as the unit utilizes and conforms to the Canon method of slide assembly, positioning and locking. It can remain on either the camcorder or viewfinder if separation is made for compact travel packing, though sits best right beside the viewfinder eyepiece extension. Also it is faster to attach to the main body mounting. When fitting the SI-XL1 to the viewfinder assembly, it is necessary to have the microphone fully forward to clear. When using a Light Wave microphone windscreen, the microphone will usually be rearward in the clamp holder.

Main benefits gained by the SI-XL1 are:

1. Distinct reduction of mechanically transmitted motor noise and operator handling noise, or shock to the microphone. Even the finest mechanisms generate an amount of bearing rumble and whine, producing a variety of high and low frequencies that combine into unwanted harmonics. Effective microphone isolation brings presence to the audio gathering process. Full isolation is accomplished by using the Mini-mount.

2. The SI-XL1 isolates both the camcorder body and viewfinder assembly unit from physical damage that can occur when an unintended bump or jolt strikes one of these, relative to the other. The SI-XL1 will enable angular displacement in all directions including rotational twist. The viewfinder and camera operator's face have a large degree of protection from any sudden displacement of the camera body and lens mass.

3. As a coupler, the SI-XL1 body length has been set at 2.375" (60 mm) to customize the camcorder balance point. Moving the viewfinder by this distance forward equates to moving the camcorder back by this same amount, where the flat base section of the unit will rest in a natural balanced carriage on the shoulder.
The camera body/lens weight factor is removed from the operators arms, resulting in a relaxed operational mode. The upper arms of the operator are now close to the chest, eabling a steadying support from the arms.

Extension length: 2-3/8" - 60 mm
Weight: 2½ ozs. - 73 g. Instruction manual Warranty: 3 years

PRICES: The MMXL1 and the SIXL1 come as a pair. The MMXL1 is $150. The SIXL1 is $125.  Together the total is $275.

The Equalizer is US$ 150

Canon U.S.A.Inc. Announces Digital Camcorder Purchase Program for Educational Institutions

Program Gives Students Greater Access to Canon's Leading DV Technology

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y. -- With the aim of encouraging the use of digital video technology on school campuses, Canon U.S.A., Inc. announced a school purchase program that would enable accredited educational institutions to purchase Canon DV camcorders at discounted rates.

Making DV camcorders more accessible by offering discounts based on economies of scale will enable students to experiment with Canon's state-of-the-art video imaging technology at a greater number of schools nationwide. Through the program, students will have the opportunity to experiment with the wide range of applications digital camcorders support, including: digital filmmaking, QuickTime movies, CD-ROM creation, and video streaming via the Internet. Additionally, as distance learning becomes more widely accepted, educators and students can more effectively reach one another in remote locations around the world.

"As digital imaging technologies continue to influence mainstream society, Canon remains committed to supporting the education and hands-on training that will further their adoption," said Yukiaki Hashimoto, vice president and general manager, Video and Camera Divisions, Canon U.S.A, Inc. "By making DV camcorders more affordable for schools, teachers can now focus more on educating students about the many applications that support video production."

To facilitate the program, Canon U.S.A., Inc. has named Michael Solomon as the account executive for the new educational sales channel. A network of educational sales agents across the country is expected to be established by the end of August.

Already taking advantage of DV technology as an educational tool, Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism has purchased 35 Canon XL1 digital camcorders, using them as a standard part of its broadcast curriculum. As part of the program, students now have the opportunity to use this broadcast-quality model to produce a variety of news, public affairs and documentary programs.

Also bringing DV innovation into its curriculum, The New York University School of the Arts' Kanbar Institute of Film and Television has been using XL1s since the Fall of 1998. Students enrolled in the University's "Fundamentals of Video Production" course are using the camcorders to shoot three location pieces over the course of a semester.

An increasing number of computers brought to market today are designed to work with DV camcorders, which connect to PCs via FireWire IEEE1394, a high-speed data transmission protocol. Connecting using only a single cable makes it fast and easy to download digital video and audio to a PC's hard drive for nonlinear editing.

All Canon DV camcorders are equipped with FireWire connectivity, and use the standardized digital video format, Mini DV, which has been widely adopted by professionals and consumers. Canon's line of Mini DV camcorders includes ultra-compact models with single CDD image sensors, such as the award-winning Optura and Elura. The XL1, which offers 3 CCD image sensors and an interchangeable lens system, and the recently-announced GL1, equipped with Canon's exclusive L-Series Fluorite 20X optical zoom lens, round out the company's broadcast-quality DV line.

Canon U.S.A., Inc. is an industry leader in professional and consumer imaging solutions and, through its parent company, Canon Inc., is a top patent-holder of imaging technologies. The company's comprehensive product line includes networked multifunction devices; digital and analog copiers (color and black and white); printers, scanners, image filing systems, and facsimile machines; camcorders, cameras and lenses; and semiconductor, broadcast and medical equipment. Canon employs 12,000 people at more than 30 facilities throughout North, Central and South America and the Caribbean.
