Left JPEG file videomode   Right : JPEG File (BMP underneath) photomode same distance to object as left picture (30cm)  (so shots in PS mode are like the wide angle shots we always wanted and using all pixels, but NOT recordable on the DV-tape only on Memory Stick.

We used S-VHS Out to JVC DV1 duodeck in and straight to Canopus DV-Raptor Photo capture DV-IN.

PC 100 does not record Frame Mode on tape!

December 1999:

PC100 inner focus system is loose in the house when camera is switched off, Sony says: this does no harm! But if this is normal we'll hear later.

How to get the very best footage using all million pixels?

This is an exclusive Global-DVC-tip to make this possible. Not so difficult if you think of it. We connected DV-OUT to DV-IN on a GVD900 and were able to tape FRAME MODE (Progressive Scan) in full 1.1million pixel and highest resolution ever! Quality is superb if enough  light.

Now PLEASE SONY why not make this mode active? Just as Canon did with MV1 XL1 GL1 Frame Mode.

Global-DVC founder Jan van der Meer Comments:

First the good news:

YES the PAL VERSION we have really has DV-IN AND ANALOGUE in, but some European countries got DV-IN only.
Also SP and LP mode and playing MiniDV DVCAM in PAL AND NTSC!

The PC100 1/4" CCD has 1.070.000 pixels (all of theses only used for photo-mode) comparison to PC3 800.000. So less squary with digital zoom (10-40) and higher sharpness in letterbox 16:9. For video she (he?) uses 690.000 (PC3 400.000 VX1000 440.000) So PC100 has a far better really visible videopicture quality and the best photo on videocams quality ever. On a 4 MB memory stick you get 6 highest quality photo's with a resolution of 1152x864 (600kB) ONLY if you actually shot in photo-mode. Photos from tape will stay in 640X480 (60kB). The reading of pixels is increased from 18Mhz to 27Mhz. Because of a new resampling system Sony used a better algorithm resulting in better picture quality. Also digital zoom gives better results now. New is also a three step Grey filter for better F stops in hard conditions. So less use of high speed shutter when exposure is at its end. Glad finally this cam has DV-IN and analogue in for us PAL buyers! Thank you Sony! And this will be good news for you Michael Pappas, PC100 has indeed Progressive Scan at 25 pictures a second! But pity no seperate Frame or Movie mode! Still we know a trick to actually record in the frame mode! According to NTSC first user test this is not possible in 30 frs/second! Our Global-DVC member Mark de Blok nearly finished a 30 episode Amsterdam police series (Blue Blue) with his totally renovated XL1, do have a look at the pictures on our NEWS Page soon.

Now the less good news, which we think is worth mentioning, but compared to the good news not too bad to stop buying!

LIGHT
This new Super HAD baby-eye needs a lot of light to get a gainfree picture. You see gain (dB) appear with inside shots, but this time less present because the 'grid' is much finer! Oh yes it has Night shot and build in infra red light, that's not only interesting for CNN use in the next war, we also use this for night shooting in black and white and add some blue mask to it!  With normal lighting PC100 needs at least 98 Lux, but for best sharpness it needs130 Lux. So for inside room use one needs an extra light unless youchoose for one of the slow-shutter speeds of course. This new Super HAD baby-eye needs a lot of light to get a gainfree picture. 3.jpg (44599 bytes)Vertical Stripe Problem

The vertical beam from high-lights you see on this cam  more than with other DV-cams.
See this PC100 videoframe JPG shot. Other cams have this problem when using higher speed shutter ranges. PC100 has this standard! (REMEMBER this was a sample model! But as Michael Pappas said: "Often a sample model does not differ from production models!)
So this could be the reason why Sony this time designed a bigger 'metal' sun hood. If this problem is going to be a real problem for you we also have a very handy "French Flag" . We call it the Anti-Flare Flag or Flare Buster. It is a real great toy which fits on top of PC100 in the accessorieshoe. More info about Anti-Flare-Flag

SOUND
Again this horrible place on top for an Automatic Gain Controlled Microphone which in a quite room first picks up the sound of its engine. Pity no Manuel control either. Solution: use an extra mic on top! The overall best one is the Sony 959. We have a superb constructed noise killing holder. Mic hangs in rubber bands to avoid camera touching noise.

ALIASING  Latest news/ tests:

DCR-PC100OUR  SERIES MODEL is indeed much better ! So don't worry!

When filming in a
so called 'Dutch' angle ('Deutch'-German-angle) the lines have very notched (milled) edges as on this photo. We haven't seen this so much on the old CCD's ( PC1/2/3!) Now remember we did all these small tests with a sample model, probably this will not happen when production line up is out. But do test yourself first!

s3.JPG (46384 bytes)BATTERY
Again stupid decision to let customers and wedding ceremonies hold up because the battery first has to be load on the camera. So no separate charger again!  Alternative : In Europe we have a 220 volt  TWIN double loader! $75. Two NP FM 50/70/90 batteries can load! Even on 12 volt!!  (Fits also JVC/CANON and NP Sony's)

A proper WHITE BALANCE is no longer at hand, so back to the old HOLD or LOCK function and Inside and Outside position.

Also no record review/ No edit search,

Dear mr. Sony Designer Why NOT??? Many love these functions.

Reguarly we see Sony Japan is visiting this Global-DVC Site. DV-IN and ANALOGUE IN WISHES CAME TRUE, THANK YOU!

NOW PLEASE DESIGNERS OUR WISHLIST FOR FUTURE MODELS!

  • Better pictures in Low Light conditions!

  • Record Review.

  • Edit Search.

  • Manuel White Balance.

  •

And if possible: (a prosumer dream)

  • Recordable Progressive scan
  • Manuel Sound Controle
  • A battery charger standard

Our wishlist gets smaller everytime!

Many buyers never had a nicer X'mass present!  This PC100 is almost perfect and offers a lot more than most other cams for less money!

NEW PC300
Rumors go the next one will be a PC300 with 3 Mega Pixel CCD's!  The PC100 has the same quality LIKE a 3CCD.  It has all inventions we have seen on PC7 PC1 PC2 PC3 and now also a typical Traveller designed Intelligent Flash Shoe Adapter! Also Night Shot and on our PAL versions DV-IN.  Finally our beloved SONY seems to listen to what us Prosumers want! YES PAL HAS DV-IN standard! BUT...NOW.....

A new DV-Cam version for 2000!
Now please Mr. Sony Developers, us prosumers would like for Xmas present (...eh we even want to pay for it!) a  PC100 DV-Cam version (PD10 or so?) with 3 MEGA PIXEL CCD's an XLR adapter at the intelligent flash shoe mount like you did with the PD100AP and please our biggest wish...... manual audio sound control! Do not make the same mistake what other manufacturers did! On a High End 3CCD Prosumer Cam Manuel Sound Control Mode IS A MUST!

BUT all these new futures and inventions also will be shown on the new coming VX2000 (early Year 2000) and that one sure will have manuel audio control! (We hope!) On this Site three years ago we asked visitors what they would like on a possible coming VX2000. And now after all this time will it be the best cam which will beat them all.

New Photoprinter for Memory Sticks

headphone.JPG (66584 bytes)

Coming memorystick sound headphone player!

Memory Stick media is an ultra-small flash storage media that is designed to share data, text, graphics, video, audio or digital images from a camcorder and transfer to a printer, PC, camera, display or other products in the future.

Sony announced a number of connectivity solutions to help consumers transfer digital images from the DCR-PC100 with Memory Stick media. The new Memory Stick PC card adapter (MSAC-PC2) transfers high resolution still images to a notebook computer in seconds (approximately 450 KByte/s write, 880 KByte/s read speeds). The new Memory Stick floppy disk adapter (MSAC- FD1A) facilitates easy image transfer to a desktop PC. The supplied serial port interface (RS-232C) also connects the DCR-PC100 to a desktop PC.

Sony also announced a 64 MB capacity Memory Stick media. With an optional 64 MB Memory Stick media and the DCR-PC100, approximately 304 mega-pixel images can be saved or approximately 18 images with the supplied 4 MB Memory Stick media. Still images can be captured in mega-pixel or VGA (640 x 480) resolutions in super fine, fine or standard picture modes.

Memory Stick media is available now in 4, 8 and 16 MB capacities. The 32 and 64 MB media will be available in October and December for $109.95 and $189.95 (MSRP), respectively. In addition, the Memory Stick PC card adapter (MSAC-PC2) will be available in October for $79.95 (MSRP), and the Memory Stick floppy disk adapter (MSAC-FD1A) will be available in November for $99.95 (MSRP).

(Pity everyone is designing its own memory size stick! Why not all choose a standard!)
