ELASTIC SUSPENSION

Comments Jan van der Meer:

To get the best sound, an extra microphone (mono or stereo) on top of your camera in the accessory shoe is always the best! BUT the mic is often too close to the camera and picks up the noise handling on the camera knobs and engine. Capstain drivers can be very noise, specially in quite areas. The mic needs to be lifted a little and the best adapter which kills the direct contact noises certainly are those which 'hang up' the microphones in rubber bands!

Dsc00014.jpg (94948 bytes)Well we tried them all. The Beyerdynamics Elastic Suspension (left)  with shaft of 19-25mm. This one we first liked the best. BUT with longer directional mono-mics we had problems as its height is too low and the longer the mic the sooner it will show up in your  picture. We had to move the mic backwards. This gave problems at the back, couldn't look through the viewfinder anymore! The solution was to put it higher up. Tried adjustable accessories, didn't work really well, makes it a wobbly construction! The second problem was the adapter which supposed to be fit in the shoemount can't be tightened! So it slipped of easy. That's terrible! The third problem was when putting it higher up it needs to be bend down a bit and that's impossible with the Beyerdynamics EA 86 model.

The Sennheiser MZS6 with two rubber bands inbetween, only fits for small 66 Sennheissers  and other small pipes. During 'whaleshooting' on our Alakaska Video Seafari tour with a bit stromger wind the rubbers in between completely bend over. Sennheiser (the right one on the picture above ) also has a very expensive noise-killer US $ 200 ! But these elastic bands were too loose; not steady enough and not all mics fit in the holder also! With a bit of wind, everything start wobbling and took the camera out position!

Dsc00012.jpg (87749 bytes)Now we found a far better product and tested it with success! This DVC-Suspension has it all. It can hold with 8 elastic bands, all sizes microphones, even my favorite Sony 959. Here with a special Rycote Windshield on top of the Sony black windshield.

Dsc00015.jpg (88093 bytes)The only problem we had  was to find the proper flash holder compatible with the shoe fittings on top of the camera. The manufacturer of these products never heard of videocamera flash-shoe adapters! Inside is 5/8" for microphonepods We had to go to 3/8" and than to 1/4".

But as you see in front we found it all! We gladly succeeded in getting all the parts one need for a very steady construction. No sliding of   camera-accessory-shoes anymore! Its even possible to hold your camera by this adapter to lift it out of your camera-case etc. Specially for our GLOBAL-DVC-SITE visitors we assembled this whole construction and sell the DVC-Suspension for only $33 and $25 for all extra assamblingparts: Slip-on mount and conversionfrom 5/8" to 1/4". You'll get it all assembled!
